Humanitarian aid has led to his death… The history of a legendary man: Mr. Alex Aronson 1975
Yesterday kak Omer Zawity and I had the chance to meet his son, Mr. Alwin Aronson for the first time. It was an emotional happening especially when he showed us a TV documentary about the case of Alex Aronson, that was broadcasted on national Dutch television in 2003. As a medical care provider he went to Kurdistan at the summer of 1974, spent several months with peshmerga’s and made an inventory of medical needs in Badinan. Begin of march 1975 he came back to Kurdistan. He was arrested by the regime of Baathists. On December 15, 1975 he was hanged in Baghdad. In March 1976 was it officially announced to the family. Alwin Aronson has also created a website to memorise AlexAronson, and to share information, personal letters and photo’s for his many friendsand people who are involved in humanitarian aid; www.alexaronson.nl. Also there are two books pubished about Alex Aronson. While Alwin was only 10 years old, he lost his father. Mr. AlexAronson has no other childeren, but as he was involved in childcare, his family regularly offered their home to children for adoption. Aronson has worked inAfrika and Asia as a medical worker for people in crisis, his last mission wasto Kurdistan in early 1975. On 8 march 1975 the foreigners were repatreated fromthe area. Alex did not want to leave because he believed that he must stay as langas he could to help Kurdish people in need. Mr. Aronson committed himself to people in bare need. Hehimself experienced suffering during his youth in German concentration camps, with his mother and other relatives. The life of Alwin and his mother are marked by the loss ofhis father. Mother never remarried, and Alwin had the responsibility for the family.A year later Alwin started to get health problems. He couldn’t handle losinghis father... Alwin and his late mother Elisabeth Aronson did not talk muchabout what happened, not to hurt each others feelings. Mrs. Elisabeth Aronsonhas passed away in march 2011. Alwin issince then alone. He has physical and mental symptoms, for wich he does not getany recognition by the Dutch government. Alwin wants to keep the memories of his fathers passion and work alive as much as he can. And he like to appeal the KDP to help realising his wish. Aronsons life was characterized by versatility: He corresponded with Martin Luther King and professor Alan Mendelson from Canada, he offered his help to Mother Teresa foundation in India, to doktor Albert Schweitzer in Nigeria and communicated with a wide variety of intellectual peoples all over the world…etc. In 1974 Alex Aronson saw on Dutch television an interview with Mr. Muhsin Dizey from KDP, whom made an appeal to the Dutch government and people to help the Kurds. This made him decide to travel to Kurdistan and to offer his assistance.
